You could find a lot of themes in the book My Name is Asher Lev , but I'm only going to talk about one theme thats going on so far in the book which is religion. Asher lev has to choose between two important things in life. Even though Asher is young and does not fathom and grasp the understanding of this world, he is still able to make up his mind on whether art tramps religion. Asher chose art because that was the only way he can express his feelings because he belives that he was born with this gift and its part of him and that there is no way he could lose it.
Asher Lev's desire or passion for his art is really strong and seems like nothing can breake it, but he has a little conflect with his father because his father is a strong beliver and works for somone that is very imoporant and very dear to the Jewish communiry which is the Rebbe. Asher's father works for the Rebbe. Asher is expacted to follow and obey the rules that are set out for them (the jewish faith).
One of the main or big things that the hasidic Jews do not allow and forbidden in their belive is drawing or anything that has to do with that concept. Although, Asher is told multiple times to not draw, he still continues to do the same thing and ignites his passion for drawing. One time, he was caught drawing the Rebbe in a evil, unpleasant way and he got in trouble. Eventhough he was confronted by others, he still continued to draw. The artistic side of him is unstoppable and ready to take any challenge for his affection and love of the arts.
